Pain Alleviating Procedures

Epidural Steroid Injection

These injections are designed to deliver corticosteroids and anesthetic medications to decrease inflammation of spinal nerves. Spinal nerves may radiate pain down the legs or the arms, depending on which nerve is irritated. Indications for the procedure include nerve pain from disc herniations and spinal stenosis.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

These needle are positioned adjacent to small sensory nerves to create a heat lesion. Once the nerve has been heated, it becomes unable to transmit pain signals, thus alleviating pain. This procedure is most often utilized to treat back or neck pain that may arise from arthritic or painful joints in the spine called facet joints. It can also be used to treat other areas of the body such as the knees.

Ultrasound-Guided Injections

These procedures utilize sound waves to steer needles into various places in the body to maximize the therapeutic response. Target locations include large joints (knee or shoulder), small joints (wrist or hands), into tendon sheath, adjacent to tendons or nerves, or into tendons. Different medications may be injected including corticosteroids (“cortisone” or “steroid”), anesthetic medicines, platelet rich plasma, or viscosupplementation (a protein gel that is used to treat knee arthritis).
